It is the policy of the Boards of Directors of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, Bennington School District, Inc., Mount Anthony Union School District, North Bennington Graded School District, Pownal School District, Shaftsbury School District, and Woodford School District to endorse the concept of fund-raising for the following reasons:
  1. The Boards recognize that fund-raising is important to the overall success and quality of co-curricular offerings.
  2. The Boards are aware of the educational and social value that can accrue to students as the result of participating in fund-raising activities, including but not limited to: work readiness, goal setting and achievement, and Vital Results curriculum implementation (from the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities, 2013).
The Boards understand that each fund-raising effort is only a part of the total community fund raising calendar and, therefore, must be carefully monitored and controlled. All fund raising activities will comply with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Policy 5200 warning and adoption dates


All fund-raising activities will receive prior written approval of the School Principal.

Applications for approval are to be submitted to the School Principal and must include all of the following information:
  1. Reason(s) for the fund-raising activity;
  2. Amount of money to be raised;
  3. Dates of fund-raising activity;
  4. Type of fund-raising activity.
The Principal will approve or disapprove each request within a two-week period of time.

Prior to submitting applications, the teachers/advisors/coaches/students must consider the need, appropriateness and the community's ability to pay.

Students involved in off-campus solicitations must be provided with identification, which is to include name, school, organization and approved fund-raising dates.

Advisors and/or teachers are to be responsible for instructing students relative to proper procedures and behavior while representing their school in approved fund-raising activities. At the elementary level children will be advised of safety precautions and parents will be notified.

A master list of approved fund-raisers, with details is to be kept in the school office and be made available to the public upon request.

Donation Protocol

  1. Prepare a letter to present to community members for the purpose of requesting a donation.
  2. Include specific information pertinent to your school.
  3. Please list where the letter will be sent in the chart provided, and log if a donation was received (or enter 0). The goal is to avoid multiple requests to the same community organizations.
  4. Please send any cash donations to the SVSU Finance Office with a copy of the letter sent, and with the community resource contact information. The donation will be presented to your school board and then placed in your school supply line.
  5. Please send a thank you note.
  6. Please list the recipient or recipients of the donation.
  7. Each school will send their donation summary to the SVSU Finance office at the end of each month.
