I. It is the policy of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, Bennington School District, Inc., Mount Anthony Union School District, North Bennington Graded School District, Pownal School District, Shaftsbury School District, and Woodford School District that a student may possess wireless communication devices in school, on school property, at after school activities and at school-related functions, provided that during instructional time, as defined in each school handbook, the wireless communication device remains off and concealed unless instructed otherwise by a teacher. The Districts therefore prohibit the personal use of wireless communication devices during instructional time. II. Definition Wireless communication is defined as those devices that have the ability to send and receive information utilizing various frequencies and carriers such as, but not limited to, cell phones, pagers, personal data assistants (PDA), laptop computers with cellular/phone capability, two-way radios, and walkie-talkies. III. Possession of a wireless communication device by a student is a privilege, which may be forfeited by any student who fails to abide by the terms of this policy. The student who possesses a wireless communication device shall assume full responsibility for its care. At no time shall the school districts be responsible for preventing theft, loss or damage to wireless communication devices brought onto their property. IV. Employees may use wireless communication devices for job-related communication during work hours provided such use does not disrupt the learning environment. Employees should refrain from personal use of wireless communication devices during work hours. V. The Superintendent or his/her designees shall publish administrative regulations to enforce this policy and to encourage appropriate use and non-use of these devices.
