It is the policy of the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union, Bennington School District, Inc., Mount Anthony School District, North Bennington Graded School District, Pownal School District, Shaftsbury School District, and Woodford School District to encourage and support the involvement of parents in their children’s education.
1. Background: Research has shown that parent involvement is a key factor in the academic and social success of students. The Board believes it is important that parents are involved in their child’s education at home, in school, and within the larger community. New educational initiatives mandate or encourage the strengthening of the parent/school/community relationship.
2. Implementation: The Superintendent or his/her designee shall develop and implement programs and procedures to accomplish the following objectives:
a. Parents should be informed about their children’s educational programs, instructional methods and objectives, and notified directly of any significant changes. Such notice shall be in a timely fashion.
b. Parents should be provided with opportunities to become informed about program design, operation and evaluation and to communicate with educators on these subjects.
c. Parents should be encouraged to observe instructional activities, to attend programs and meetings, to take advantage of opportunities to participate in program evaluation and improvement efforts, and to give recommendations to school staff, administration, and Board members.
d. Parents should be provided opportunities to increase communication between parents, students, and schools to improve their abilities to work with their children at home and in school and to build partnerships between homes and schools.
e. Professional and non-professional staff members, administrators, School Board members, and school-community partners should be provided training to improve their abilities to build more effective relationships with parents.
